You may not realise it but women in many other countries don't get a lot in the way of government support after being affected by breast cancer. This is the case for women affected by breast cancer in Fiji.
In Australia, we have great screening services, medical facilities, public education, government subsidised breast prosthesis and in many cases private health funds covering mastectomy lingerie....no such thing in Fiji...Just a group of dedicated self funded women trying to help women affected by breast cancer.
Tracey G Prosthetics and Lingerie, Colleens Lingerie and Swimwear and a group of dedicated women from the Fiji Cancer Society are helping these women just that little bit more during May and have hit the ground running fitting our little hearts out.
Many companies and individuals have donated mastectomy bras and breast prosthesis free of charge which have been shipped to Fiji for us to fit. While we're here we're also training the Fiji Cancer Society on how to provide a great fitting bra and prosthesis.
The common theme that runs through my mind is that we definitely live in the lucky country...sometimes we might not think so but walk a mile in some of these womens shoes and you might just have a re-think!
Remember the fitting experience you had when you were fitted at Tracey G-Prosthetics & Lingerie...we do our best and try to make it world class for you in beautiful stores, but when you have a look through the attached pics you'll understand...lets just say this is as good as it gets for many, many women in Fiji in terms of post mastectomy garment fitting.
So far we've fitted ladies in Labasa, Sigatoka and Lautoka and Suva. Thats where we are as you read this post, and will be for a few days. We opened for business at 8am this morning and by 11am we'd fitted around 40 ladies.
Theres been plenty of laughs, hugs and a few tears but the spirit of these ladies in incredible and they are all so appreciative of what we're doing.
